Van Gogh's Starry Night



 

Description: After looking at Van Gogh's Starry Night. We were tasked to make our own. First, we used an acrylic base to glue all different colors of tissue paper down. Then we had to cover the whole page in the acrylic base. After letting it dry for the night, I used oil pastels to put white and black into our background. We then cut out the black paper for the front and glued it on. 

Expansion Activity: This could be used when reading stories. Allowing your students to write their own story, and then physically make the scene their story takes place in. 

Hidden Safari Project


 Description: We were asked to look at two of Henri Rousseau’s safari paintings, where we found things he would hide in the backgrounds of his paintings. We then looked at drawings of people making their own safari painting. We used cool colors to make a drawing, then warm colors to cover it. After making ruby red glasses, we were able to put them on and see through the warm colors to the original cool colored picture. 

Extension Activity: This could be used when learning about words that have multiple meanings. Ie,  Homonyms: Words that sound the same and may be spelled the same but have different meanings (e.g., "bat" as a flying animal and "bat" as a sports equipment). Polysemy: A single word that has multiple related meanings (e.g., "bank" as a financial institution and "bank" as the side of a river). Homographs: Words that are spelled the same but have different meanings and may or may not be pronounced differently (e.g., "lead" as in to guide and "lead" as in a type of metal). To show that something may not always be what we first think it is.
